I bought a Motorola Droid when they first came out, since then I have been amazed at what the phone is actually able to do. It has more power and speed than my computer did a decade ago.
There is much hype right now about the Android 2.1 update, and when you first update the phone you will wonder what the hype was all about. After you learn what was really updated you will be impressed. Android 2.1 has Live Wallpapers, 3D Cool Iris gallery, and several other features. One thing to keep in mind is this is a minor update, but at a minor update it is a huge success for me.
Well I couldn’t wait for Verizon to rollout the Android 2.1 update so I found the file and did it myself. There were a few bumps, but the phone booted up with all the new features, and has a very noticeable speed increase. I am happy with my impatient decision so I decided to post the whereabouts of the said update info. You may or may not have good luck with it, so if you are not tech savvy wait for the OTA from Verizon.
I owe my new Droid Android 2.1 OS to the clever people at Soft Sailor who have the working download I used with instructions. I made one small variation to the instructions by loading the update.zip file directly onto my SD card via the USB tether. I understand if this is done with Windows it changes the name to update.zip.zip so make sure of the name.
I did notice I had to reboot the phone myself after the update, but that didn’t seem to be a problem. The Android 2.1 is a great update that solidifies the very solid performing Motorola Droid.
